Bavaria Yachts

Introduction

Bavaria Yachts has been a prominent player in the yacht manufacturing industry for over four decades. Since its establishment in 1978, the company has built a remarkable reputation for producing innovative series yachts. With a sprawling shipyard spanning 200,000 square meters in Giebelstadt, Bavaria Yachts has created over 42,000 high-quality sailing yachts and motorboats. In this article, we will delve into the rich history, notable achievements, and exceptional craftsmanship that define Bavaria Yachts.

Foundation and Growth

The story of Bavaria Yachts began in 1978 when Winfried Herrman, a window manufacturer, and Josef Meltl, a yacht charter broker, joined forces to establish the company. What started as a modest venture soon evolved into one of Europe’s largest yacht manufacturers and the biggest yacht yard in Germany. By 2006, Bavaria Yachts had produced approximately 3,500 sailing and motor yachts, employing a workforce of 600 dedicated individuals.

A Change in Ownership

In June 2007, the founders of Bavaria Yachts sold the company to Bain Capital, a US private equity investor. The transaction, estimated to be between 1.1 and 1.3 billion Euros, marked a significant milestone in the company’s history. However, due to the market crash of 2008, control of Bavaria Yachts was transferred to US private equity investors Anchorage Advisors and Oaktree Capital Management in October 2009.

Leadership and Expansion

Throughout its journey, Bavaria Yachts has been helmed by visionary leaders who have driven the company’s growth and expansion. In August 2010, Jens Ludmann, formerly the Chief Engineer of Ford Motor Company, assumed the role of spokesman for the management board. Under Ludmann’s leadership, Bavaria Yachts continued to innovate and diversify its product portfolio.

Bavaria Yachts Acquires Nautitech Catamarans

In July 2014, Bavaria Yachts made a strategic acquisition by purchasing Nautitech Catamarans, a renowned French catamaran producer. This move allowed Bavaria Yachts to expand its product offerings and tap into the growing catamaran market. With the addition of Nautitech Catamarans to its portfolio, Bavaria Yachts solidified its position as a leading player in the industry.

Turbulence and Revival

In April 2018, Bavaria Yachts faced a challenging period as it filed for bankruptcy. However, on 16 September 2018, Capital Management-Partners GmbH (CMP) stepped in as the new financial investor and officially acquired Bavaria Yachts. The company’s future seemed uncertain until a last-minute purchase contract was signed, ensuring the revival and continuity of Bavaria Yachts.

The Resilience of Bavaria Yachts

Today, Bavaria Yachts stands strong with a dedicated team of approximately 600 employees in Giebelstadt. The shipyard spans over 656,000 square feet, with a production area covering around 230,000 square feet. The commitment to excellence and the relentless pursuit of perfection are evident in every yacht produced by Bavaria Yachts.
